The CRA Has Gone Paperless: How It Impacts Your Business

Say goodbye to paper! Earlier this month, June 16, 2025 (or May 12, 2025 for new program accounts), the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) moved away from paper mail and shifted  to online correspondence for most business accounts.

  • This encompasses all notices, letters, forms, and related documents for your business tax account.
  • The date the correspondence appears in your online account will be regarded as the official receipt date.

What this means for your businesses:

Transitioning to digital mail may notably change how you manage your CRA Business Number account, particularly for GST/HST, corporate income tax, and payroll.

If you don’t switch, you risk missing vital CRA notices, some of which have time-sensitive deadlines.

What can businesses do:

  1. Update your email address: Ensure your email address is up-to-date in your CRA My Business Account.
  • Sign in to My Business Account
  • Verify and update the email address associated with your business account
  • You can add up to three email addresses per program account in my Business Account
  1.  Opt out if needed: Businesses can also opt-out of online mail and request paper mail delivery, but must renew this preference every two years.
    • You must submit Form RC681 – Request to Activate Paper Mail for Business, either online through My Business Account or by mail.
    • If paper mail becomes undeliverable, your account will revert to online mail delivery, according to the CRA.
  2. Exceptions to the rule: Some businesses, like charities, non-resident businesses, or those not registered for online services, will continue to receive paper mail unless they opt-in to online correspondence.
  3. New Business owners: Register for My Business Account:
    • If you are a new business owner, register for My Business Account after registering your business number and program accounts.
  4. Stay informed:
    • Keep your contact information up-to-date in your My Business Account.
    • Be aware of deadlines

Taking these steps helps businesses stay on top of CRA updates and avoid the hassle of missed mail. Consult a tax professional if you have questions or concerns. We are always excited to help. Contact Homeroom today here.
