This month’s client of the month is Greg Street owner of G.H. Street Development Ltd a family run construction and project management company primarily based in Vancouver.
G.H. Street Development Ltd has been serving the Vancouver area for close to 30 years. During that time they have completed many large and small scale projects including: renovations, new homes, custom homes, multi-family homes and spec. developments. How many years have you been in business?
Our family business has been doing Quality Plus General Contracting in Vancouver since 1981 and while I have been involved in different capacities for the past 10 years, I recently took ownership of the business last year.
What do you enjoy the most about being a business owner?
I spent many years working for other people before I realized that I really wanted to work for myself. Although you put a lot more time and energy into running a business, the rewards and freedom it provides make it worthwhile.
What motivated you to start your own business?
Growing up with entrepreneurial parents is what really drove me to want to run my own business and to know that it was possible. Also, knowing that I had the freedom to determine my work/life balance.
What advice do you have for other people who would like to start their own business?
Starting your own business can be scary. I have been very lucky to have great support from my parents who have helped ease the transition. My advice would be to believe in what you are doing and make sure you have the drive to get up everyday and do what you love, whatever that may be.
How do you achieve a work life balance?
One of the biggest benefits of working for yourself is having the ability to take time off when you need it. So if I have had a busy week or month at work I make sure to take time for myself to do the other things I enjoy whether it be traveling, playing sports or spending time with friends and family.
