Homeroom Client of the Month: The Hive Bouldering Gym

This month’s client of the month is Andrew Coffey owner of  The Hive, Vancouver’s only Bouldering Gym.

Apart from being an amazing Homeroom client Andrew has been an avid climber since the tender age of 14 and has greatly contributed to the Vancouver climbing community.

The Hive’s philosophy is that ‘Everyone is a Climber’ and that you are never too young or too old to start.  At the Hive they offer you a safe, supportive environment in which you can explore your climbing abilities at your own pace.

They are also very community focused and are known for regularly hosting events for all ages.

How many years have you been in business?

We were founded in 2010 and have been open for business for almost two years now.

Our 2nd anniversary is actually coming up on the 22nd of  March, 2014 and we are having a big party to celebrate from 12-6pm so make sure you come by and join the fun.

What do you enjoy the most about being a business owner?

I enjoy many things about being a business owner, but in particular, I enjoy seeing the joy that people experience when they are at our facility for both regular climbing activities and for the special community events that we hold each month.

I am also very happy to be contributing to the health and well being of so many individuals. We do this offering them an avenue to pursue their climbing and by supporting youth climbing with our various school and recreational programs.

What motivated you to start your own business?

I was motivated to start my own climbing gym because I saw a great need within the local climbing community for a climbing gym that focused on community and catered to the sub-genre of climbing known as bouldering.

What advice do you have for other people who would like to start their own business?

If I could offer some advice, it would be to seek out as much advice as possible. Do your research, know the market, be patient in the search for money and locations and be open and ready to seize the opportunities that arise. Make sure you persevere and explore all available options.

How do you achieve a work life balance?

To be honest, I do not do a very good job of balancing work and personal life. The toughest thing for me to do is step back from the work environment because there is always something to be done and despite the fact that I have a lot of  amazing people working with, and for me, at the end of the day I am ultimately responsible.

However, when I figure out how to achieve this balance I’ll let you know!  😉

And finally who could benefit from your services?

We offer a spectacular variety of climbing terrain, climbing programs, and community events. We are particularly good at introducing new people to climbing through our intro course, as well as through school programs, birthday parties, corporate events, and special theme nights (many of which support causes such as the Canadian Breast Cancer Society and Movember Canada).

In addition, we have also enjoyed the patronage of some of the world’s most elite climbers, proving that we are also an excellent facility for those who are very experienced.
